i love it when TV shows make references to other TV shows
now we just need a show that references Supernatural
You mean like
Stage 1: Those who leave as soon as the movie ends
Stage 2: Those who know to stay until the credits for the extra scene
Stage 3: Those who stay until the end of the credits for the second extra scene
I’m a stage three.
We all are
Stage 4: those who will stay until the ushers kick them out because they don’t trust marvel
No man, for any considerable period, can wear one face to himself and another to the multitude, without finally getting bewildered as to which may be the true.
Oh anon, we most certainly can talk about this, because what you refer to here to goes to the very heart of why I love Dean Winchester.
In the second half of season 9 we got two very different and contrasting readings on Dean’s character in two consecutive episodes, First Born and Sharp Teeth. In the former, Cain called Dean:
Brave, but impulsive. You truly have lived up to your reputation.
He also commented on Dean’s tendency to carry the weight of the world:
Since when does the great Dean Winchester ask for help? Well, that doesn’t sound like the man I’ve read about on demon bathroom walls. Maybe you’ve lost a step. Let’s find out.
This is Purgatory!Dean. The thing that monsters fear. The thing that takes out 3 demons single-handedly. The thing that Crowley says is worthy of the Mark of Cain. Dean caps it off by asserting that he is a killer
Cain - The mark can be transferred to someone who’s worthy.
Dean - You mean a killer like you?
And them we have Garth one episode later who sees him as a big ole teddy bear, like you said anon. This is LARPing Dean. The Dean that wuvs hugs. That tells the little sister he never wanted that he loves her.
Now, I think Dean has both of these elements inside him. He already had a vicious streak in him before going to hell and a very black and white view of the world. I think growing up a hunter, well, there’s no way to avoid. To grow up a son of John Winchester…
Well, as I explained here, Dean has basically always worn a mask of hyper-masculinity given to him by John. He wore a mask of indifference for most of season 3, while clearly he was scared out of his mind. He wore a mask forgetfulness when he first returned from hell so he could hide what he had done there. The man constantly buries his true self. For me, light and dark have always fought a battle inside Dean Winchester.
And if there is one thing seasons 8 & 9 (and so most likely 10) give us with regards to Dean, it is the inner struggle between these fairly fundamental character traits of Dean. In the ying and yang of Dean’s light and dark side, I would say his natural state, once you’ve dug through the self-loathing, is actually light. I would say Dean’s natural inclination lies more towards the teddybear. I mean, the way he is with kids, how relaxed he is when dorking around, how he takes care of people.
Uggghhhh, and anon, no fair mentioning touch-straved, cause holy hell do I agree with that. Much has already been said about Dean being very gentle/submissive in the sack, but look at the way that boy reacts when someone touches him lovingly. And if I may nicely segue to Cas for a sec, I can’t imagine what a being of heavenly intent that whirls into Dean’s personal space and is always just short of touching him… Small wonder that hug in Purgatory got to us all the way it did.
Sorry, anon, I feel like I’m rambling and I can’t really get out the meta I had in mind when I so eruditely stuck that quote at the top. LOL.
To make long story short, while I do think that a lot of people/creatures read Dean wrong and the hard-core, BAMF cover doesn’t match most of the soft and cuddly story inside, there are some footnotes to Dean that are genuinely dark. It is also why I love him so much.
a study in prayer.
